Lisa Fegen has taught middle school science in HISD for 14 years and was honored to receive the Teacher of the Year award during the 2007-2008 school year. She has created and implemented a series of successful camps at Lanier Middle School, including all levels of science instruction ranging from grades 6-8. One of her biggest accomplishments has been the development and execution of a comprehensive sixth grade orientation packed with activities to help incoming students make the often stressful transition from elementary to middle school a memorable and enjoyable experience for both students and parents. When she is not teaching, learning or running her own business, Lisa’s secret ambition is to compete on Dancing with the Stars. |

Mikey Keating Smith comes from a family of teachers – her mother, father, and sister are all educators! Mikey has worked for HISD for 8 years and is currently a Middle School Literacy Instructional Specialist for the district. She has taught almost every grade level, from kindergarten to high school, including 6th & 7th grade literacy, ESL Oral Language Development and Home Economics at Lanier and Pin Oak Middle Schools. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism with a minor in American Studies from Penn State, is a Dyslexia Specialist, and has created curriculum for and taught classes on cooking, etiquette, and all facets of the writing process. She is a Gemini, has a dog named Cleo, and enjoys cooking and running. |

LAURA ANDERSON
Laura Anderson is a 6th grade Literacy teacher at Lanier Middle School. She has a Middle School Education degree from Texas A&M University in Language Arts and Social Studies. Laura believes that in order to be effective, teaching can’t be a job you settle for but a passion! She strives to ignite in every student the desire to be the best they can be. Writing can open a young person’s mind to expand their creativity and ability to succeed across all walks of life. Outside the classroom, Laura loves to be outdoors and active; this year her goal is to make it to the white beaches of Australia. |

JENNAH BECKWITH
Jennah Beckwith earned a degree in business marketing from the University of North Texas. Deciding the corporate life wasn’t for her, she went back to her first love, teaching kids—however, instead of teaching swimming lessons for the YMCA, she decided to teach school. She now has her alternative certification from Region 4 and is ready to embark on her new venture. She is putting what she has learned to good use as an assistant at a Montessori school and at Raising the Bar as she pursues a classroom of her own. |

BARB FINKEL-BENNETT
Barb Finkel-Bennett loves teaching and kids of all ages. She facilitated staff workshops on writing instruction and taught Spanish at St. John’s School and Poe Elementary before becoming a seventh grade math teacher at Lanier Middle School. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from Baylor University and is currently working on her Master's Degree in school counseling. She hates to cook but loves exercising and running. In fact, she just completed her certification in Spinning and is qualified to teach Spinning classes although she has no intention of actually teaching a Spinning class. In fact, she just wanted to learn how to adjust the bicycle, but was too embarrassed to ask!

PAULETTE BOGERT
Paulette Bogert likes to spend her time in the classroom as both a student and a teacher! In addition to holding a principal’s certificate, she has a B.A. in French from Oberlin College, an M.A. in French from Bowling Green State University and an M.B.A. from Tulane University. Paulette has been teaching in HISD for 13 years at the middle school level preceded by 5 years at the high school level. She has served as technology coordinator and technology department chair, Saturday Math Camp instructor, and has taught robotics, web design, keyboarding, podcasting, journalism, business ventures, English as a second language (ESL), French 1 & 2, and German 1 & 2 in the HISD Virtual School. Her hobbies include reading, cooking, sailing, swimming, and anything else that gets her outdoors.

RICK BRENNAN
Rick Brennan holds a bachelor’s degree in history with minor degrees in Spanish and Education from the University of Houston. He has taught social studies in HISD since 2000, and currently teaches sixth grade world cultures at Lanier. Rick also works with both Writers in the Schools (WITS) and the Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG). At WITS, Rick teaches poetry and creative writing to high school students and provides teacher training and professional development, while at SIG, he developed advanced academic courses for gifted and talented students from around the world. In his spare time, Rick has been known to finagle keys to the city from unsuspecting mayors and to enjoy his favorite food, peanut butter.

SONYA CHEN
Sonya Chen is a 6- 8th grade Mandarin Chinese teacher at Lanier Middle School. She was born in a small village in southern China where she spent the first fifteen years of her life. There were no video games, no computers, and no movies therefore she found enjoyment in nature. She moved to U.S. in 2000 to attend high school and graduated from University of Illinois in 2008, majoring in Education. She has taught Mandarin Chinese to K-8 students in Robert Healy Elementary School in Chicago. She is engaged and moved to Houston in fall 2009. Sonya loves teaching Mandarin and the Chinese culture to all students. |

EVELYN CUBBERLY
Evelyn Cubberly is a 5th year teacher at The Harris School. She received her Bachelors from Trinity University in English Literature. She also has a Masters in Educational Psychology from University of Houston. She is an avid reader and loves a good mystery novel. She is inspired by people who have a thirst for education, and loves challenging herself to further her own. Evelyn loves to paint, and takes painting classes whenever she has the opportunity. Outside of school, Evelyn loves to run and ride her beach cruiser outdoors in the Heights. She also enjoys monkeying around with her friends and family.

JEREMY DEPEW
Jeremy Depew has worked in the veterinary field since 2000, though his interest and exposure to animals, nature and veterinary medicine has been life-long. Between Hospital Management, Pet Sitting and the care of his own animals, most of the hours of his day seem to be covered in feathers and fur. Is there any other way?! Jeremy enjoys opportunities to spread his wings and educate others, and has in the past provided instruction during Medical Support Courses for the Cypress Creek Advanced Tactical Team. Drawing from his past life as a childcare provider for children of all ages, he has also found it rewarding in assisting youth organizations as they work to obtain animal related awards and merits. When not caring for other people's pets, one of Jeremy's favorite pastimes is spending time with his Terrier mix Bella, Umbrella Cockatoo Honey, and cat Wendy, usually all cuddled up together. He also enjoys spending time at the gym, hiking, canoeing and exploring the great outdoors. He cannot imagine a life without pets, or a world without animals. |

DANIELLE GOLDEN
Although she's a mild-mannered teacher by day, Danielle Golden loves the drama and glamour of The Real Housewives of New York and New Jersey! A self-professed pop-culture fanatic, she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and psychology and a master’s degree in reading from Southern Connecticut State University. Danielle taught in Maryland at the elementary and middle school level for 10 years before moving to Houston to be closer to her family, and hopes to secure a full-time teaching position in a Houston school in order to continue her work with children. . .and to finance her secret ambition to take a road trip to all of the water parks around the country. |

FRANZ HILL
Franz Hill has been teaching theatre/speech and debate in HISD for 13 years. He's been the debate coach at Lanier Middle School for the past four years and has helped them to 3 of their past 8 debate national championships. He's taught at J. Will Jones Elementary and Jane Long Middle School. Not only does he enjoy being at Lanier, but he feels he has one of the best jobs in the entire district (although he would probably leave it all to be a sports writer if the opportunity ever presented itself). He's a native Houstonian and is happily married with three elementary-aged children. |

CAMEDRA JEFFERSON
Camedra Jefferson is a huge people person who loves working around diverse thinkers. She is a UH Downtown graduate and is an experienced Case Manager and Math Resource teacher for HISD. She is working toward a Masters of Education at the University of St. Thomas with an emphasis in Reading Specialist Certification, and is an active Board member for the Center for the Healing of Racism, a non-profit organization. Camedra is inspired by her students, especially those who continue to strive for success, despite major adversity and learning disabilities. Her part time interests are yoga, reading, humanitarian work, art, music, travel, and imitating celebrity singing voices.

KATIE KEENAN
Katie Keenan is a 7th grade social studies teacher and is in her 4th year working at Fonville Middle School. She is a proud Texas Christian University graduate and is currently working on her Masters in Educational Psychology at the University of Houston. She loves history and focuses on encouraging her students to make connects between past events and their current life. She has worked as the field trip coordinator and cheerleading sponsor, looking for opportunities that the students in her community would not otherwise have. Outside of school she enjoys searching for four leaf clovers and making her Irish ancestors proud.

GARY KEESE
Gary Keese was born and raised in College Station, Texas and ended up attending Texas A&M where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. While attending A&M he spent three weeks on a church campaign in Thailand, after which he dedicated two years in the Philippines as an Apprentice Missionary. This altruistic quest naturally led him into the teaching profession. He has been in the profession for 26 years, of which the last 20 years have been at Lanier Middle School teaching various technology classes. Gary’s love for the outdoors stems from spending his summers with his grandfather who worked on a large ranch in the Hill Country. Gary enjoys photography and almost any kind of competitive sport. These days he loves to travel and spends most of his time trying to keep up with his three daughters.

KAREN KEESE
Karen Keese loves to teach students how to see the world through different eyes in her visual arts classes. She wants her students to know that art is not just an elective to take in school, but something that surrounds them in the world they live in daily. Karen grew up in Oklahoma, drawing from the time she can remember, and learned how to use a camera when she was young under the supervision of her father. She received her Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Oklahoma Christian University in Commercial Art and has been teaching middle school and high school art, photography, and yearbook for 9 years at Westbury Christian School in Southwest Houston. She enjoys travelling, sewing, and music, but most of all, loves spending time with her husband and three daughters.

LC KIRKPATRICK
LC Kirkpatrick is a former football player from the University of Houston. He graduated in 2007 with a degree in Health Education. He is currently a 6th grade Physical Ed Teacher and he coaches 7th and 8th grade football and track. He has 15 years of experience combined in coaching and participating in sports. He loves the great outdoors and has received certifications to be an angler educator and archery instructor. In his spare time he enjoys fishing, photography, cooking, traveling, and spending quality time with his 5 year old son and 3 year old TRIPLETS!!!

SUMMER MAGEE
Summer Magee has taught 8th grade Literacy at Lanier MS for 6 years and believes in creating a lifelong love of reading and writing within her students. Although she has a passion for all genres, her heart rests mostly within Southern novels and short stories. She received her B.A. in English from Trinity University and a Masters in Education specializing in Literacy and Language Arts from UT at Austin. She has worked for WITS creative summer writing camp for 6 years and considers herself a “writer who also teaches”. Her passion for creative thinking and writing guide her work within her Literacy classroom and within her own writing life. Summer’s life outside of work centers around family and culture; she spends a month of her summer vacation at the family home in Greece, attempting to perfect her Greek speaking skills while eating a lot of grilled octopus and shouting OPA! as often as possible.

JAN MEEK
Jan Meek has taught social studies at Pin Oak MS for seven years. Before she "graduated" to middle school, she created and taught theme units on history and culture as a part of the SIGHTS curriculum at Mark Twain Elementary. She earned her B.S. and M.S. in Education many moons ago, but she stays fresh and up-to-date by attending workshops at Rice University's Chao Center for Asian Studies and the Museum of Natural History. Still, she is quick to say that she has the most fun and gains the most knowledge from being in the classroom with students. Now that her two awesome daughters are out of the house, she is pursuing a long-held dream of showing dogs (her new furry kids, Boon and Sunnie, both Australian Cattle Dogs) in both conformation and obedience classes.

CARRIE MILLICAN
Carrie Millican is a 7th grade Vanguard science teacher at Lanier Middle School where she has taught for seven years. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and minor in biology from the University of Houston and has had a lifetime love of science and learning. Her mom says finding bugs in her pockets when she was little was definitely a sign of her future interests. She has been a teacher/trainer of both adults and children but prefers teaching children because they are better-behaved. In her downtime, she’s a bit of a technogeek and spends way too much time on the computer, loves reading suspense novels and tries to convince herself that exercise is fun. |

AMBER PARKER
Amber Parker has known that she wanted to teach since her sophomore year in high school. She holds a bachelors degree from University of St. Thomas and has recently attained her Masters of Arts in Teaching-Curriculum and Instruction from University of Houston-Downtown. In her teaching career, Amber has taught first grade, reading intervention, home economics, technology, and is currently teaching 6th grade reading. When she is not grading papers or planning lessons, Amber also enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and running (slowly…very slowly) and watching sci-fi television series. When Amber grows up she wants to be a baker, a geologist, or a Jedi.

BRYAN PAULE
Bryan Paule has been dancing for 10 years, coming a long way from practicing with his friends in the garage. He has traveled and performed in many cities such as: New Orleans, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. He has appeared on local television and also national television in shows such as the Tony Danza Show, The Early Show on CBS, the Superbowl, and MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. When he’s not traveling and performing, Bryan is one of the dance directors at Lanier Middle School and a student at the University of Houston studying Pharmacology. He is one of the founding members of HIStory, a collective group of dancers that currently perform locally and nationally. In Bryan’s spare time he enjoys video editing, photography, choreographing, and EATING! |

SHERRI POWELL
Sherri Powell has 12 years of teaching experience under her belt and is currently an Educational Technology Specialist with FBISD. Sherri enjoys teaching Web Design, Digital Publishing, Tech Applications, and running a student-centered magazine entitled “The Charger”, which she created in the Spring of 2003 and is the only one of its kind in the district. She has an Educational Specialist degree (Ed.S) in Technology Management & Administration from Nova Southeastern University, a Master’s degree in Technology Education from California State University at Dominguez Hills and a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. She is the proud mother of an energetic 9 year old daughter, Alyssa. In her spare time, Sherri enjoys shopping, traveling, and watching movies. After she retires from teaching, she plans to look into becoming a flight attendant or a personal shopper. |

JENNIFER PUNG
Jennifer Pung has worked for Lanier Middle School for the last seven years. She teaches world cultural studies for sixth graders and coaches 7th grade volleyball. She loves exploring the world in the classroom and showing students other places in the world. She graduated from TCU with an education middle school social studies degree. One of her life goals is visiting every presidential library. She has currently been to six. When Jennifer is not at Lanier she loves playing softball and pressing her luck at bingo. |

LINDSEY RAMIREZ
Lindsey Ramirez is currently in her 6th year of teaching. She is certified to teach math (grades 4 - 8), general education (K - 4), and special education (K - 12). She graduated from Rice University in 2002 with a B.A. in Sociology and Studio Art. In 2006 she earned her M.Ed. from the University of St. Thomas and iHin 2009 she completed a teacher training program to become a registered yoga teacher (RYT-200). Lindsey loves connecting with students and facilitating students' connections to academic content and to the world around them. In addition to teaching, Lindsey LOVES her Bullmastiff puppy, Mia. Together they go to dog obedience classes where Mia is in training to be a volunteer therapy dog. |

JULIE ROBERTS
Julie Roberts is an 8th grade science teacher at Lanier Middle School. She studied at Bowling Green State University for a Bachelor's of Science in Middle Childhood Education with a focus in Math/Science and at Grand Canyon University for a Master's in Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Classroom Technology. Julie has taught 8th and 9th grade science for four years in Ohio and Texas. Julie loves integrating the use of technology into all aspects of her life, especially teaching and learning! Outside the classroom she enjoys activities such as boating, kayaking, snow skiing, gardening, camping and hiking. Since moving to Texas she has been exploring all that the greater Houston area has to offer. |

JENNIFER ST. AMAND
Jennifer St. Amand knew way back in high school that she wanted to work with children after spending two years as a receptionist/teacher at a local ballet studio. She graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Elementary Education...Go Coogs! She began her teaching career almost 9 years ago at Roberts Elementary where she had the privilege of teaching 5th grade, running the Extended Day program, and acting as the Summer School Coordinator. Throughout the years, Jennifer has taught dance, drama, and journalism after school and sponsored the student council and yearbook. She earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Lamar University which has helped her be successful as Vanguard Coordinator at Lanier Middle School. In Jennifer’s spare time she loves to play with her two dogs, read, dance, paint, re-decorate her house, and kickbox.

MICHAEL ST. AMAND
Michael St. Amand is pursuing a degree in Graphic Design at the University of Houston Clear Lake and is excited to be entering his last year. Michael believes that Graphic Design is more than just a form of art, it's an expression of an artist's ideas. He focuses mainly on digital art, using computer programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and In design. When he's not creating art, he loves to yoyo, learning intricate tricks that to some may seem impossible, but with practice seem to make sense.

KATHERINE STAMP
Katherine Stamp currently teaches art at Pin Oak Middle School and is passionate about art education! As a kid, Katherine participated in the IB art program and attended summer school at the Rhode Island School of Design for painting. She majored in Graphic Design at the University of Oklahoma and focused on Ceramics at the University of Houston where she earned her BA in art education. She loves art of all kinds and works as a freelance artist in her free time focusing on watercolor painting and photography. When she’s not being artistic, Katherine devotes her time training her throughbred. |

AURORA TERRY
Aurora Terry is a world traveler who takes time out of her busy globetrotting schedule to work as the International Baccalaureate instructional coordinator at Lanier Middle School. She got her bachelor’s degree in history and her master’s degree in education from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and she has taught in Spain, Mexico, and Colombia. She has traveled through Europe, South America, Turkey and China. This spring she will be going to Saudi Arabia with the World Affairs Council. Although she has made her home in Texas for years, Aurora grew up in Lake Tahoe, Nevada where she still likes to return in the winter to dominate the black diamonds on the ski slope. |

POLO VIGIL
Polo Vigil is a seventh grade vanguard math teacher at Lanier Middle School, where he has worked for 11 years at a variety of grade levels. He enjoys teaching middle school and preparing students for their academic journeys from high school to college and beyond. Before becoming a teacher, he worked in many areas of chemistry, including Environmental, Petroleum, a Research Chemist at Argonne National Laboratory, and finally as a Forensic Chemist with the Houston Police Department Crime Lab. He has a degree in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics from the University of New Mexico. He is an identical twin (older by 5 minutes) and an avid coffee fan who proudly worked as a barista at Starbuck’s for four years. Polo balances out the caffeine by practicing yoga several times a week.

BOYD WISNIEWSKI
Boyd Wisniewski tried his hand at a variety of professions before finding his true calling as a math teacher. He worked as a lumberjack and served as an officer in the US Navy, which were walks in the park compared to Middle School. He worked at the college level for 4 years before moving to Lanier Middle School, where he has worked for 14 years teaching 8th grade math and Algebra 1. Boyd is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and is a Texas Certified Math teacher in grades 1 through 12 with a special certification in Math for grades 1-8.
