Summer Learning Loss Research

Ahh, the joys of summer. . .sand between your toes, a tall glass of frosty lemonade, the TI-83 Plus scientific calculator. . . Let’s face it – math is probably not many kids’ favorite subject, but research shows that students who practice skills over the summer break have greater success when school starts again. A Johns Hopkins study found that students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during the summer months, and that teachers must spend approximately 4-6 weeks re-teaching material to students who have experienced such a learning loss. Counteract brain drain and have your child doing long division, fractions, geometry and more single-handedly with our Number Crunch class!

Our Number Crunch class was designed by a certified middle-school math teacher to make math concepts accessible to even the most math-phobic students and to enhance and improve upon existing math skills for all students. Small class sizes, hands-on lessons and enthusiastic instruction help to make math downright FUN for middle-schoolers.

Lessons include:

“Buying on a Budget”

“Battle of the Burgers”

“Cooking up Fractions”

“Balloon Rockets”

This course is intended for incoming 6th graders to help prepare for new concepts, but is also a great class for incoming 7th graders to sharpen their skills for the new school year.

Concepts include:

  • Areas of Shapes

  • 2-Dimensional Visualization

  • Fraction Word Problems

  • Fraction, Percent, and Area

  • Ratios

  • Angle Measurements

  • Geometric Analysis
  • Patterns and predictions with fractions
